Real Madrid CF leapfrogged FC Barcelona into third spot in the Liga after their 6-1 triumph against RC Deportivo La Coruña followed the Catalan club's 1-1 draw at home with RCD Mallorca.
Josep Guardiola's side appeared to be en route to a routine victory at Camp Nou when Lionel Messi curled in a 21st-minute opener, but Emilio Nsue headed the sides level before the interval. Despite constant second-half pressure, the champions could not prise a winning goal and dropped to fourth in the standings, three points behind pacesetters Valencia CF.
Madrid had only scored six times in their first five league games but doubled their tally at the Santiago Bernabéu. Los Merengues were three up at the interval with headers from Cristiano Ronaldo and Ángel Di María sandwiching Mesut Özil's first for the club. Gonzalo Higuaín and a Zé Castro own goal then made it five, before Juan Rodríguez added a consolation and Ronaldo burst through to complete the scoring.
Villarreal CF are second after overcoming Real Racing Club 2-0 thanks to efforts from Nilmar and Giuseppe Rossi inside 12 minutes, while Sevilla FC sit fifth following a 3-1 victory against Club Atlético de Madrid. Getafe CF complete the top six after they swept aside visitors Hercules CF 3-0.
