Leaders 1. FSV Mainz 05's remarkable run continued as they posted a seventh successive win, matching the record for the best start to a Bundesliga season set by FC Bayern München and 1. FC Kaiserslautern.
It took the hosts just two minutes to set the ball rolling in a 4-2 defeat of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim when Sam Allagui pounced on Adám Szalai's through ball. Though Demba Ba levelled before the break, Szalai (47) and a Luiz Gustavo own goal (59) gave Mainz a two-goal cushion. Gylfi Sigurdsson's 64th-minute free-kick gave the visitors hope until Andre Schürrle made sure of the points from the spot (73).
VfL Wolfsburg had been on a winning streak of their own but missed the chance to move into fourth after they drew 1-1 at VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach. Steve McLaren's men were on course for a fourth straight success when Thomas Kahlenberg (27) struck but Thorben Marx headed the hosts level (65).
Meanwhile, SC Freiburg enjoyed a 3-2 triumph at the expense of 1. FC Köln to move into fourth place, while ten-man FC Schalke 04 slumped to a 2-1 defeat − their fifth of the campaign − at 1. FC Nürnberg. Elsewhere, Kaiserslautern suffered the same fate against Hamburger SV.
