BV Borussia Dortmund were the day's only Bundesliga victors, defeating a FC Schalke 04 side who remain bottom and without a point to their name after the Ruhr Valley derby.
Schalke, 1-0 losers at Olympique Lyonnais on UEFA Champions League Matchday 1, have now suffered four successive domestic reverses. They were behind after 20 minutes against Dortmund, Shinji Kagawa giving the visitors the lead before adding a second on 58 minutes. Nicolas Plestan's dismissal presented Schalke with even more of an uphill struggle and substitute Robert Lewandowski iced the cake for Jürgen Klopp's side late on. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's first goal for the hosts offered scant consolation a minute from time.
There was more decisive late action at FC St. Pauli, where the home team had led Hamburger SV through Fabian Boll's 77th-minute strike only to be pegged back by Mladen Petrić with two minutes remaining. Hamburg are now fifth, while Bayer 04 Leverkusen are eighth having been held to a goalless draw by third-bottom FC Nürnberg.
