FC Barcelona suffered their first home Liga defeat for more than a year as Hercules CF came away from Camp Nou with a 2-0 win while Ricardo Carvalho ensured José Mourinho had a happy introduction to the Real Madrid CF home fans.
Newly-promoted Hercules had actually won on their last visit to Barcelona in 1996/97, but that did not make it any less of a surprise when Nelson Valdez, making his debut after signing from BV Borussia Dortmund, scored on 27 and 59 minutes. The Alicante-based side thus became the first away team to win at Camp Nou since CA Osasuna on 23 May 2009.
Osasuna themselves lost 1-0 at Madrid as Mourinho gained victory on his home debut as coach; his former FC Porto and Chelsea FC defender Carvalho got the winner on 48 minutes. Madrid are on four points, one ahead of Barcelona but two behind Valencia CF, who continued their perfect start with a 1-0 defeat of Real Racing Club. Atlético de Madrid also secured a second win, holding on to prevail 2-1 at Athletic Club.
