Robben wins top prize in Germany

FC Bayern München have added another two honours to their ever-increasing raft of awards after Arjen Robben was named Germany's Footballer of the Year and Louis van Gaal claimed the Coach of the Year prize.

Bayern tasted glory in the Bundesliga and German Cup last season as well as reaching the UEFA Champions League final, where they were beaten 2-0 by FC Internazionale Milano. Robben, who moved to Germany from Real Madrid CF last summer, was a pivotal figure in his side's success, scoring 16 goals in 24 Bundesliga appearances.

He also found the net four times in the UEFA Champions League, including decisive strikes against ACF Fiorentina and Manchester United FC. "It's a great honour, a reward for a fantastic season," said the Netherlands international, who helped his country to the FIFA World Cup final in South Africa last month. The 26-year-old former Chelsea FC winger beat team-mate Bastian Schweinsteiger to the top prize but is currently out with a torn thigh muscle and therefore missed Bayern's 2-0 Super Cup win against FC Schalke 04 on Saturday.

Robben's countryman Van Gaal has also been rewarded for an impressive debut season in the German top flight. "Just one game was missing and we would have won everything," he said. "I'm happy about winning this vote. Every prize or title is a reason to celebrate."  FCR 2001 Duisburg's Inka Grings retained her title as Women's Footballer of the Year.
