Teófilo Gutiérrez’s second-half hat-trick ensured Trabzonspor AŞ secured a 3-0 win against Bursaspor to claim their first Turkish Super Cup crown since the pre-season contest returned in its current form in 2006.
Trabzonspor won the Turkish Cup in May thanks to a 3-1 final victory against Fenerbahçe SK, who were pipped to the domestic league title by Bursaspor on the final day of the championship campaign. Neither silverware winner seemed prepared to take the initiative in the Super Cup, however, until Trabzonspor finally took the game by the scruff of the neck after half-time.
Şenol Güneş's side, who will face Liverpool FC in the UEFA Europa League play-offs following Friday's draw, showed far greater control in possession throughout the second period. Colombian international striker Gutiérrez failed to score a league goal in his first campaign in Turkey but showed great composure to find the Bursaspor net on 55, 62 and 72 minutes.
"Despite the hot weather, my players played with sacrifice and fought hard on the pitch," said Güneş. "That's even more important than winning the Super Cup. Lifting the trophy by beating the defending champions has boosted our morale."
Güneş's Bursaspor counterpart, Ertuğrul Sağlam, was far less enamoured by his own side's display. "This is an unexpected result for us," he said. "We were not creative at all and failed to do positive things on the pitch. Trabzonspor totally deserved this success and I want to congratulate them." Trabzonspor begin their league campaign at MKE Ankaragücü on 15 August, with Bursaspor hosting Konyaspor the following day.
