Season review: Austria

Having stormed through the UEFA Europa League group stage with six straight wins, FC Salzburg claimed their second title in a row with a 2-0 final-day win against SK Sturm Graz, who knocked Huub Stevens' side out of the Austrian Cup on the way to winning the trophy.

Champions: FC Salzburg
They did not end their campaign in the same domineering form in which they started it, but Salzburg found their form when it mattered to take their third title in four seasons. A dramatic improvement in their away form helped; they took 33 points on their travels, more than any of their rivals. "We are overjoyed," said striker Marc Janko once the race was over. "A huge weight is off our minds. We had been lacking a little bit of a cutting edge in our most recent games."

Klemen Lavrič headed the only goal of the game ten minutes from time as Sturm – who finished fourth in the league – took their fourth Austrian Cup. "We all expected to win today," admitted coach Franco Foda, still dripping from a champagne shower. "I'm happy for our supporters but most of all for the team. The boys worked hard for this."

Player of the year: Somen Tchoyi (FC Salzburg)
The Cameroonian midfielder dazzled fans and pundits alike with his great technique, dynamic acceleration and eye for an unmarked team-mate. The 27-year-old Tchoyi's eight goals and 13 assists were crucial to Salzburg defending their title.

One to watch: Aleksandar Dragović (FK Austria Wien)
Already capped nine times by Austria, Dragović put more experienced defenders to shame with his composure in the Austria Wien defence. The sky seems to be the limit for the 19-year-old, who is reportedly being monitored by the likes of SSC Napoli and FC Internazionale Milano.

Surprise package: SCM Wiener Neustadt
In their first season in the top-flight, the team from Lower Austria finished fifth in the ten-team league and never looked to be in danger of being relegated. Peter Schöttel's side also battled through to the Austrian Cup final, but victory against Sturm was beyond them.
