FC Internazionale wrapped up their 18th Scudetto and fifth in succession on the last day of the Serie A season as Diego Milito's strike downed AC Siena and kept the Nerazzurri's hopes of a historic treble alive.
Milito's 57th-minute winner ensured José Mourinho's charges retained their league crown, having already claimed the Coppa Italia, with only FC Bayern München in the UEFA Champions League final next Saturday standing in the way of a remarkable trophy haul this season.
Chasers AS Roma started the day two points adrift of the summit but could have snatched the championship with victory at AC Chievo Verona had Inter failed to win. At the halfway point in the afternoon that scenario appeared extremely plausible, with the champions being held and Claudio Ranieri's hopefuls two goals to the good through Mirko Vučinić and Daniele De Rossi.
The tension in the Inter ranks was obvious but they finally made the breakthrough when Javier Zanetti burst past two players and slipped a pass into the area that Milito latched on to before clipping his finish into the far corner. Roma, who lost the Coppa Italia final against their title rivals following a Milito strike, maintained their 2-0 advantage but it proved in vain as the Nerazzurri celebrated at the final whistle.
UC Sampdoria will play in the UEFA Champions League play-offs next season after securing fourth spot on the final day. Giampaolo Pazzini's 19th goal of the campaign earned a 1-0 victory against SSC Napoli and retained the Genoa side's two-point buffer to US Città di Palermo, who won 2-1 at Atalanta BC thanks to Edinson Cavani's 95th-minute penalty. Elsewhere, there were final-day victories for Parma FC, AS Bari and Calcio Catania.
