FC İnter Bakı took advantage of defeat for title rivals FK Khazar Lankaran on the final day of the season by claiming a 4-1 home win against FK Qäbälä that handed them their second Azerbaijani championship in three seasons.
Khazar, leaders at kick-off, were one of four clubs who started the last round of matches in with a chance of taking the crown, along with İnter Bakı, FK Qarabağ and 2008/09 champions FK Bakı. Agasalim Mirjavadov's team ultimately ended the campaign in fourth, however, after losing 1-0 at home to Bakı, who finished runners-up as a result. That opened the door for İnter Bakı to take the title by a point, Robertas Poškus scoring a 25-minute hat-trick in their defeat of Qäbälä.
Kakhaber Tskhadadze, the İnter Bakı coach, said: "I'm really happy that the league ended in a fair battle. Now all of Azerbaijan will watch us in the UEFA Champions League. We're proud at the moment, but this will count for nothing if we play poorly in Europe." His side will enter Europe's premier club competition in the second qualifying round, while Bakı will get to grips with the UEFA Europa League in the first qualifying round along with Qarabağ, who finished third following a goalless draw at PFC Neftçi.
