Chelsea chase English double

Chelsea FC are attempting to become the seventh club to win the English double when they take on Portsmouth FC in Saturday's FA Cup final having secured the Premier League title in scintillating style last weekend.

Carlo Ancelotti's side defeated Wigan Athletic FC 8-0 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday to become the first team to score 100 goals in an English top-flight season since 1963 and reclaim the crown from Manchester United FC after a four-year wait. Thus, Chelsea are overwhelming favourites to defeat a Portsmouth team who finished 67 points (albeit having had nine points deducted) behind the champions and 11 adrift of second-bottom Hull City AFC.

Preston North End FC, Aston Villa FC, Tottenham Hotspur FC, Arsenal FC (three times), Liverpool FC and Manchester United (three times) are the only other clubs to have won the two biggest domestic honours in the same season in England.

Chelsea are also bidding to become the sixth club to retain the trophy following their victory over Everton last season while 2008 winners Portsmouth can make their own special mark by becoming the first relegated club to win the cup – four others have reached the final, most recently Middlesbrough FC in 1997.

"If we were to do the double it would be a fantastic first season," said Ancelotti, who won the Coppa Italia four times as an AS Roma player and once, in 2002/03, as AC Milan coach.

The man who guided Chelsea to the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League final, Avram Grant, will be in the Pompey dugout at Wembley and he joked that he has an agreement with his former employers "that they will stop at four". The Israeli added: "I know we are underdogs but it's 11 versus 11 and we will try to play football."

Another landmark is in sight on Saturday as Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole can become the first player to win the cup six times having triumphed three times with Arsenal and twice with Chelsea. The only two other players to have collected five winners' medals did so in the 19th century.
