FC Basel 1893 eased to a fifth Swiss Cup triumph in eight years with a 6-0 victory against FC Lausanne-Sport at St. Jakob-Park.
Playing in front of over 30,000 supporters in their own stadium, Basel were overwhelming favourites against their second-tier opponents and opened the scoring through Valentin Stocker's 28th-minute header, moments after Jérôme Sonnerat had passed up the chance to give Lausanne the lead. The impressive Xherdan Shaqiri swiftly doubled the advantage before Basel made certain of the outcome with goals in the early stages of the second half from Jacques Zoua and Scott Chipperfield.
Stocker and Benjamin Huggel added further gloss in the final quarter of an hour, leaving coach Thorsten Fink full of praise for his team's "superb focus", while he even apologised for "not making it an exciting final". Basel have a three-point gap to overturn on Super League leaders BSC Young Boys, however, if they are to complete the double. Both teams have two games left and meet in the final round of matches next Sunday in Berne.
