ACF Fiorentina forward Adrian Mutu has been suspended for nine months after twice testing positive at doping controls in January, the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) has announced.

The 31-year-old was given a provisional suspension on 29 January after sibutramine was found in his urine sample following the Serie A game against AS Bari on 10 January and the Coppa Italia match with S.S. Lazio ten days after that.

CONI's anti-doping body meted out a nine-month suspension today after ruling on Mutu's responsibility in the affair and the Romanian will now be ineligible to play until 29 October 2010, having already spent two months on the sidelines.

Mutu was also banned for seven months by the English Football Association in November 2004, a suspension extended worldwide by FIFA, after testing positive for cocaine while at Chelsea FC.
