Sammy Baird, who featured in Rangers FC's maiden European fixture in 1956/57 and made 172 appearances for the Ibrox club, has died aged 79.

Rangers FC are mourning the loss of former player Sammy Baird, who died on Wednesday aged 79.

Baird scored 52 goals in 172 appearances in all competitions for the Ibrox club during the 1950s, and played in their maiden European fixture in 1956/57, against OGC Nice. He was also in the team which lost to Eintract Frankfurt in the semi-finals of the 1959/60 European Champion Clubs' Cup.
