RCD Mallorca remain in fourth spot despite being held to a 1-1 home draw by struggling Málaga CF.
Mallorca coach Gregorio Manzano had dubbed the encounter as "the most important of the season" and though the islanders failed to pick up maximum points, they can count themselves fortunate to have garnered a draw. The visitors' Milan Stepanov was dismissed a minute before the interval but Málaga nevertheless went in front four minutes from time through Victor Obinna. Mallorca, however, denied their visitors a win that would have put them four points clear of the relegation zone, Aritz Aduriz scrambling in a header a minute into added time.
That result gave Sevilla the opportunity to move into the final UEFA Champions League berth. It was one they spurned, though, twice surrendering the lead in a 4-3 loss at Getafe CF. Luis Fabiano (33) and Frédéric Kanouté (38) helped give Antonio Álvarez's team a 2-1 half-time advantage that was wiped out by Pedro León 13 minutes after the interval. Luis Fabiano restored the visitors' lead three minutes later but the hosts were not to be outdone and secured victory thanks to Manu (75) and Dani Parejo's penalty four minutes into added time.
Real Valladolid CF are one of two clubs trailing Málaga by two points having secured a much-needed 2-0 victory at Real Sporting de Gijón − a match in which both sides were reduced to ten men late on. CD Tenerife are also on 32 points following a 3-1 reverse at UEFA Europa League semi-finalists Club Atlético de Madrid.
Villarreal CF, meanwhile, are sixth, four points adrift of Mallorca courtesy of a 2-1 success over Real Racing Club, while RCD Espanyol climbed to 11th with a 1-0 win against UD Almería. The Barcelona outfit had Nico Pareja sent off five minutes into added time.
