Mifsud treble rounds off centenary celebrations

Celebrations to mark 100 years of competitive football in Malta and the 50th anniversary of the Malta Football Association's membership of both FIFA and UEFA drew to a close on Tuesday evening at the national stadium in Ta'Qali.

Valletta FC and Floriana FC brought down the curtain on the festivities with Valletta triumphing 3-1 in the final of the National League 100 Years Cup. The Citizens were victorious courtesy of a Michael Mifsud hat-trick – the Maltese national team's all-time top scorer's second treble in the space of four days taking his tally to nine goals in six games in all competitions since returning to his homeland last month.

Captain Gilbert Agius was part of Valletta's Centenary Cup success in 2000, which also came as a result of a 3-1 final win against Floriana. "This triumph means a lot to me both on a personal note and for my beloved Valletta," he told UEFA.com.

"It means a lot to me because I have become the only Maltese footballer to have won both one-off trophies – two trophies that come along every 100 years! It also means so much to my club. Having won on both occasions against our derby rivals Floriana, it means so much to every person in Valletta."
