Roma beat Inter to throw race open

AS Roma have closed the gap at the top of Serie A to just one point after beating FC Internazionale Milano 2-1 at the Stadio Olimpico.

Roma have been closing on Inter in recent weeks and took the lead after 17 minutes in the capital. Marco Cassetti's cross was spilt by Júlio César and Daniele De Rossi forced in the loose ball. The home side then had chances to double the lead, though were given a scare just before the break when Walter Samuel headed against the woodwork for Inter.

Luca Toni threatened for the hosts after the interval, while for Inter it was Wesley Sneijder who looked most dangerous. The Dutch international helped engineer the 66th-minute equaliser, in fact, as his cross was turned in by Diego Milito. Parity was maintained for just six minutes, however, Toni firing low into the bottom corner after Rodrigo Taddei's shot had fallen into his path. Milito struck a post in the fifth minute of added time as Inter failed to recover.

José Mourinho's side will now look to bounce back at home to PFC CSKA Moskva on Wednesday in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. In Saturday's other game, Fabrizio Miccoli 's hat-trick game US Città di Palermo a 3-1 win against Bologna FC that puts them four points ahead of fifth-placed UC Sampdoria. On Sunday AC Milan have the chance to move back to within a point of Inter when they play S.S. Lazio.
