Sevilla FC conceded an added-time equaliser against Xerez CD to miss out on reclaiming fourth place in the Liga after RC Deportivo La Coruña's hopes of pushing for a UEFA Champions League place took a blow in an earlier fixture.
Frédéric Kanouté fired Sevilla in front from the penalty spot (63) at Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán and the Andalusians were on course for three points before Argentinian Leandro Gioda scored for the Liga's bottom club as full time beckoned.
Deportivo were also undone by a last-gasp goal as they went down at Real Sporting de Gijón, Diego Castro deciding the match from the penalty spot with four additional minutes played. Depor goalkeeper Daniel Aranzubía (11) and defender Alberto Lopo (90+2) were both dismissed.
Sporting Gijón rise to tenth (35 points) while Depor remain seventh on 42 and Sevilla in fifth on 45. The top two, Real Madrid CF and FC Barcelona, are in action on Thursday and Wednesday respectively.
