Milan pass up chance to overhaul Inter

Despite knowing victory would take them clear of city rivals FC Internazionale Milano at the top of Serie A, AC Milan could only manage a 1-1 draw with SSC Napoli at San Siro.

AC Milan spurned the opportunity to take pole position in Serie A when they were held to a 1-1 draw by SSC Napoli, on a day when AC Siena lifted themselves off the foot of the table via a 1-0 victory over Bologna FC.

A fifth stalemate in seven league outings for FC Internazionale Milano on Saturday had left the titleholders vulnerable at the summit, but signs that their city rivals would struggle to take advantage came early at San Siro. Milan right-back Massimo Oddo collided with goalkeeper Christian Abbiati, leaving Hugo Campagnaro (13) with the simple task of slotting Ezequiel Lavezzi's pass into the unguarded net. Although Filippo Inzaghi headed in a cross from Ronaldinho − who turned 30 today − 13 minutes later, the Rossoneri were unable to add to their account and remain a point shy of the top.

Elsewhere in the upper reaches, Juventus finished a disappointing week with a 1-0 loss at UC Sampdoria, for whom Antonio Cassano (76) was on target. The Blucerchiati climbed above their opponents into fifth as a result, level on points with fourth-placed US Città di Palermo. At the other end, Siena boosted their survival hopes thanks to Marcelo Larrondo's tenth-minute winner, the 21-year-old's first Serie A goal lifting his side off the bottom and a point above AS Livorno Calcio, who succumbed 3-0 at relegation-threatened Atalanta BC.

Siena remain four points from safety, however, because fellow strugglers S.S. Lazio also prevailed, triumphing 2-0 at Cagliari Calcio. Sunday's remaining matches both finished 1-1, with AS Bari sharing the spoils in their game against Parma FC and AC Chievo Verona unable to protect their lead over Calcio Catania.
