Leverkusen and Bayern locked at top

Bayer 04 Leverkusen are just one goal ahead of FC Bayern München at the top of the Bundesliga after the leading pair both recorded Saturday victories.

Having dropped two points at VfL Bochum 1848 last weekend, unbeaten Leverkusen were keen to get back to winning ways against VfL Wolfsburg in their afternoon game and did so thanks to a strike from Stefan Reinartz and an own goal by Wolfsburg goalkeeper André Lenz. Edin Džeko replied for the visitors 11 minutes from time.

Bayern then kicked off knowing a three-goal win against BV Borussia Dortmund would take them to the summit for the first time since the end of the 2007/08 season. However, they fell behind to Mohamed Zidan after five minutes, though Mark van Bommel equalised midway through the first half. His fellow Dutchman, Arjen Robben, put Bayern ahead in the 50th minute and Mario Gómez made it 3-1 a quarter-hour later, halving his side's goal-difference deficit to one.

Ruud van Nistelrooy came off the bench at VfB Stuttgart and turned the game in Hamburger SV's favour. The Dutch forward scored two goals, his first for the club, in as many second-half minutes as Bruno Labbadia's team consolidated fourth place with a 3-1 victory.

Werder Bremen – who along with Wolfsburg, Hamburg and Hertha BSC Berlin are in UEFA Europa League round of 32 action on Thursday – had five different scorers in a 5-1 win at third-bottom Hannover 96, while Bochum moved eight points clear of the latter after defeating TSG 1899 Hoffenheim 2-1. Elsewhere, bottom-placed Hertha drew 1-1 with 1. FSV Mainz 05 and on Friday, VfL Mönchengladbach overcame lowly 1. FC Nürnberg 2-1. On Sunday, Eintracht Frankfurt host SC Freiburg, while 1. FC Köln visit FC Schalke 04, who will aim to go back to within three points of Leverkusen and Bayern.
