Carlos Tévez reminded Manchester United FC of what they are missing by scoring twice to help Manchester City FC come from behind and defeat their cross-town rivals 2-1 in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final.
Penalty given
Tévez joined City last summer after two seasons at Old Trafford and continued his prolific form of late by taking his tally to 13 goals in his last eleven appearances. It was United, however, who edged in front after 17 minutes when Antonio Valencia outwitted Craig Bellamy on the right and crossed to the near post, where home goalkeeper Shay Given denied Wayne Rooney only for Ryan Giggs to turn in the rebound. United had not conceded in the competition this term but that statistic changed three minutes before the break thanks to Tévez's powerfully-struck spot-kick after Rafael had hauled down Bellamy.
Tévez header
Giggs almost restored the visitors' lead just before the hour with a header which Given blocked at the far post, though it was Roberto Mancini's team who struck again on 64 minutes, Tévez in the right place to head in Vincent Kompany's cut-back from close range. United piled on the pressure in the closing stages but there was to be no way through as City, contesting their first major semi-final since 1981, moved within 90 minutes of a place at Wembley. The second leg takes place next Wednesday at Old Trafford.
