Shock triumphs
FC Barcelona carried off the main prize in 2009 by beating Manchester United FC in the UEFA Champions League final, while FC Shakhtar Donetsk became the first Ukrainian club to win the UEFA Cup in what was the competition's final edition. Germany justified their billing as favourites by winning UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2009™, although there shocks aplenty in domestic football – notably in the Bundesliga where VfL Wolfsburg won the title for the first time, and France where FC Girondins de Bordeaux ended a ten-year wait for championship glory.
