Bafétimbi Gomis scored the only goal against his former side as Olympique Lyonnais defeated arch rivals AS Saint-Etienne 1-0 to keep in touching distance of leaders FC Girondins de Bordeaux, who beat AS Monaco FC by the same scoreline.

Gomis winner
Gomis, who signed for Lyon in the summer having started his career at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, pounced seven minutes from time after Verts goalkeeper Jérémie Janot had failed to clear Kim Källström's corner as Lyon moved above Monaco to second in Ligue 1. Monaco, meanwhile, dropped to third after falling to their fourth league defeat of the season at Bordeaux, who had Marc Planus's 62nd-minute goal to thank for victory.

Auxerre climb
AJ Auxerre are up to fifth in Ligue 1 after beating Montpellier Hérault SC 2-1. Ireneusz Jelen scored both goals in the first half for the home side, who won for the fifth game in a row. Olympique de Marseille fell further off the pace following a 1-1 draw at home to Toulouse FC. Visiting goalkeeper Yohann Pelé was dismissed after only eight minutes but that did not stop Moussa Sissoko opening the scoring for Toulouse on 28 minutes. It was not until 15 minutes from time that Brandão belatedly earned the home side a point.

Grenoble lose again
Elsewhere, Grenoble Foot 38 are still looking for their first point after eleven games following a 2-0 home defeat against LOSC Lille Métropole, while AS Nancy-Lorraine are up to eighth thanks to a 2-1 win at US Boulogne. RC Lens ended a run of four straight defeats during which they had not scored with a 1-1 draw at home to seventh-placed FC Lorient.
