UEFA gave the local population in its home town of Nyon in western Switzerland the opportunity to view its lakeside location at the weekend as part of the European Heritage Days – a joint action of the Council of Europe and European Commission.
Admiring the view
A considerable number of visitors came to the House of European Football on the shores of Lake Geneva to admire the gardens around the building and gain an idea of the lakeside view which takes in impressive scenery, including the neighbouring French Alps. The vital importance of water was the key local theme of the weekend's activities.
Open days
The European Heritage Days, aimed at nurturing architectural and environmental heritage, were launched in 1991, and citizens in 49 countries celebrate the event each year. The public are able to visit and view buildings, monuments and sites that are not usually accessible to them.
Appreciation of European cultures
Objectives of the European Heritage Days include raising awareness of citizens to the richness and cultural diversity of Europe; creating a climate in which appreciation of the rich mosaic of European cultures is stimulated; countering racism and xenophobia and encouraging greater tolerance beyond national borders; informing the public and political authorities about the need to protect cultural heritage; and inviting Europe to respond to the social, political and economic challenges it faces.
