FC Bayern München's disappointing start to the season continued as they lost 2-1 at 1. FSV Mainz 05, a stark contrast to a Bayer 04 Leverkusen side who cruised to a 5-0 win at SC Freiburg.
First-half goals
Bayern were hopeful of earning their first league victory following draws against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and Werder Bremen but the promoted side, who had also drawn their first two Bundesliga contests, were quick to take advantage of their opponents' early-season problems. Mainz caught Louis Van Gaal's side cold with two strikes in the opening 38 minutes, Andreas Ivanschitz and Aristide Bancé on target, and then resisted a second-half comeback after Nikolce Noveski's own goal (47) had reduced arrears.
Five-star Leverkusen
Leverkusen moved to the summit ahead of Sunday's fixtures by making it seven points from nine available at the 2. Bundesliga champions. Stefan Kiessling broke the deadlock after 35 minutes and the visitors accelerated away after the break with Tranquillo Barnetta and Eren Derdiyok helping themselves to two goals apiece.
Stajner double
A goal in either half from Jiri Stajner provided a first win of the campaign for Hannover 96, 2-0 at 1. FC Nürnberg, while the day's other two matches ended in draws. VfB Stuttgart's Georg Niedermeier's 47th-minute goal cancelled out Nelson Valdez's opener in a 1-1 draw at BV Borussia Dortmund while 1. FC Köln claimed their first point in a goalless stalemate against Eintracht Frankfurt.
