Bundesliga champions VfL Wolfsburg began the defence of their title with a 2-0 victory against VfB Stuttgart thanks to late goals from Zvjezdan Misimović and last season's 28-goal leading scorer in Germany, Grafite.

Late strikes
Misimović curled a left-footed effort past Jens Lehmann with 19 minutes remaining while Grafite, with Stuttgart anxiously pressing for an equaliser, secured victory for coach Armin Veh over the club he left in November with a cool finish after drifting inside from the right. The breakthrough was just reward for the hosts who were twice denied by Lehmann in the first half, the Stuttgart goalkeeper first beating out a shot by Edin Džeko and then turning Grafite's strike over the crossbar. UEFA Champions League play-off contenders Stuttgart had earlier come close to opening the scoring when Sami Khedira had his header from a cross by debutant Pavel Pogrebnyak saved at the foot of the post by Diego Benaglio.
