Mario Gómez scored twice on his debut for FC Bayern München in a 3-1 victory at SpVgg Neckarelz in the German Cup first round, although there was no such success for Hannover 96, who were surprisingly beaten by fourth-tier outfit SV Eintracht Trier 05.

Shock exit
Things initially started promisingly for Hannover, going ahead five minutes before half-time through Jan Rosenthal. However, the hosts – coached by 1999 UEFA Champions League finalist Mario Basler – hit back with three goals in the final half hour to secure a famous victory. Gómez, who joined Bayern in a €30m deal earlier this summer from VfB Stuttgart, struck twice in the space of six minutes just after the break as Louis van Gaal's team registered a routine win over their sixth-tier opponents.

Five-star Bremen
Elsewhere, there were no further unexpected casualties as the other Bundesliga clubs all booked their places in the second round. Holders Werder Bremen put five past 2. Bundesliga club 1. FC Union Berlin, Boubacar Sanogo and Marcelo Moreno each scoring twice, and Eintracht Frankfurt won 3-0 at Offenbacher Kickers 1901 thanks to three goals in the final 20 minutes.

Second-half goals
TSG 1899 Hoffenheim also left it late, scoring twice in the last eight minutes to defeat FC Oberneuland 2-0, while Diego Klimowicz's strike shortly after the interval was enough for VfL Bochum 1848 to overcome Sportfreunde Lotte. The first round concludes on Monday when Hamburger SV travel to Fortuna Düsseldorf.
