Powell delighted, Dennerby pleased

England manager Hope Powell was delighted after a 1-1 draw against Sweden took her side through to the UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2009™ quarter-finals as one of the two best third-placed teams, a good recovery having lost their opener to Italy. Sweden coach Thomas Dennerby said it did not matter that their proud run of not conceding a goal in this tournament, including qualifying, had come to an end because they had reached their objective of first place in Group C.

We are really pleased to get out of the group which has been particularly hard for us after the start we made aginst Italy. We knew we had to raise our game to get where we wanted to be and at times we did play well, certainly in the second half. But I must applaud Sweden – they are solid and physically strong. Now we can look forward to playing Finland in their home country in the quarter-finals. I'm sure it will be a fantastic atmosphere and it's great that we can stay in Turku and don't have to pack. But for the moment we're just concentrating on enjoying the fact that we've got out of the group. We'll start worrying about Finland tomorrow.

[The opener] is probably the most important goal I've ever scored for England – I don't get that many! It was important we got through the quarter-finals. We knew we could play better than we had done over the first two games and to do it against Sweden is really pleasing. Facing Finland will be tough and they will have a lot of fans behind them but we like playing in front of a big crowd so it should be a good experience.

It was a strange game and neither team were able to dominate. There were a lot of long balls. We have conceded a goal but it's not a problem because we have won the group and that's the main thing. I have said before that England have a good team and they showed that tonight when some people maybe had some doubts after the first two games. I always thought England would get better and better and they played at a level that I expected. When Sweden and Norway play it can go either way. They play with a lot of heart and good stamina and are a tough team to beat. We have had some good results against them recently apart from the friendly match just before the tournament but that [1-0] defeat might be a good one for us because we now know we have to perform at our best level to beat them.
