In the presence of those who will make up his board of directors, the 62-year-old Pérez took over from interim president Vicente Boluda. A club statement read: "With no more than one candidate running for the position and in virtue of the club's social statutes, Don Florentino Pérez has been proclaimed president of Real Madrid." Pérez started his first term at the club's helm in 2000 and was re-elected four years later before leaving his post in February 2006. Under his stewardship, Madrid won two Liga titles (2001 and 2003), the UEFA Champions League (2002), a UEFA Super Cup (2002), two Spanish Super Cups (2001 and 2003) and one European/South American Cup (2002).
