Mamadou Niang struck twice as Ligue 1 leaders Olympique de Marseille salvaged a 2-2 draw against Toulouse FC, while Olympique Lyonnais's hopes of an eighth title in a row faded with a 2-0 loss at Valenciennes FC.

Two Mamadou Niang goals saw leaders Olympique de Marseille salvage a 2-2 draw from their home game against Toulouse FC, while Olympique Lyonnais's hopes of an eighth successive French title became substantially more remote with their 2-0 loss at Valenciennes FC.

Niang scores
In their first game since coach Erik Gerets announced his intention to leave the club at the end of the season, Marseille twice went behind to goals from André-Pierre Gignac (48 and 72) – his 20th and 21st of the season – only for Niang to restore parity (63 and 73), though the latter goal took a handy deflection off Toulouse's Mauro Cetto. Second-placed FC Girondins de Bordeaux can join Marseille on 68 points if they beat FC Sochaux-Montbéliard on Sunday.

Audel double
Third in the table this morning, Claude Puel's Lyon came unstuck at the Stade Nungesser with Johan Audel their tormentor. The 25-year-old cut past Jean-Alain Boumsong before scoring Valenciennes' 23rd-minute opener, and Hugo Lloris was beaten by the same player six minutes later, with François Clerc and Cris failing to pick up Audel from Gael Danic's ball. Lyon are now without a win in four Ligue 1 games.

Lille setback
LOSC Lille Métropole's hopes of a European place for next season took a knock as they lost 3-1 at FC Lorient, while SM Caen moved out of the bottom three with a 3-1 win against Le Mans UC 72. Elsewhere, a 0-0 draw with AS Nancy-Lorraine did little for AS Saint-Etienne's battle to avoid the drop, AJ Auxerre won 1-0 at AS Monaco FC and Grenoble Foot 38 drew 0-0 with OGC Nice.
