Zlatan Ibrahimović scored both goals as FC Internazionale Milano responded to their UEFA Champions League exit with a 2-0 win against ACF Fiorentina, while Filippo Inzaghi's double took his career haul to 300 goals.

Nervous opening
Inter showed signs of uncertainty following their defeat to Manchester United FC and were thankful to goalkeeper Júlio César on a number of occasions for taking maximum points. Ibrahimović broke the deadlock on eleven minutes in fortuitous circumstances when Sébastien Frey punched Mario Balotelli's free-kick against the Swedish striker, and the 27-year-old wrapped up the victory in stoppage time with a powerful free-kick to move them seven points clear of Juventus at the Serie A summit.

Pato double
Scorer of a hat-trick last time out against Atalanta BC, 35-year-old Inzaghi continued his rich vein of form in AC Milan's 5-1 win at AC Siena, turning in a David Beckham corner on the stroke of half-time after Andrea Pirlo had given the Rossoneri the lead with a sixth-minute penalty. Pato increased the damage ten minutes after the restart before Massimo Maccarone (62) reduced the deficit, but nine minutes later Inzaghi promptly restored Milan's three-goal cushion with a typically opportunistic finish to notch up his 300th competitive effort. Pato (78) then completed the scoring to consolidate Carlo Ancelotti's men in third.

Napoli frustration
US Città di Palermo also registered five goals as they saw off US Lecce 5-2, but there was no such joy for Roberto Donadoni in his first game as coach of SSC Napoli, the eleventh-placed side's winless run hitting double figures at basement outfit Reggina Calcio. Elsewhere, Torino FC lost 2-0 at Atalanta, AC Chievo Verona moved further away from danger with an excellent 3-0 triumph at S.S. Lazio, UC Sampdoria drew 2-2 with AS Roma and Udinese Calcio drew 1-1 with Calcio Catania.
