Manchester United FC restored their two-point advantage over Liverpool FC at the Premier League summit after Ryan Giggs scored the only goal at West Ham United FC while Tottenham Hotspur FC and Arsenal FC drew 0-0.
British record
The Hammers were six games unbeaten in the top flight prior to the visit of the champions and their run seemed set to continue with chances at a premium in the opening 45 minutes. Lucas Neill and Carlton Cole both tested Edwin van der Sar as the Dutch goalkeeper attempted to keep a 13th straight Premier League clean sheet and break the British record of 1,155 minutes without conceding a goal in the league.
Giggs winner
The resolute rearguard of Sir Alex Ferguson's side laid the bedrock for their eighth successive league triumph and 35-year-old Giggs then provided the decisive moment as he dummied two players on the edge of the area and fired a low shot into the far corner of Robert Green's goal. Manchester United have a game in hand on all of their title rivals while West Ham remain eighth.
Red card
Arsenal held firm to secure a goalless draw at White Hart Lane after Emmanuel Eboué was shown a 37th-minute red card in the north London derby. The hosts were the dominant force even before that with both Aaron Lennon and Luka Modrić testing Manuel Almunia early on and, having also lost Emmanuel Adebayor to a hamstring injury in the lead-up to Eboué's sending-off, Arsenal required defensive fortitude to claim their point.
Chances spurned
Spurs failed to take presentable chance with Robbie Keane heading over and Luka Modrić denied by Almunia in the dying seconds when the Croatian midfielder went through on goal. The draw leaves Spurs just two points clear of the relegation zone in 15th, with their opponents five points shy of fourth-placed Chelsea FC.
