Curmi replaces Talbot at Marsaxlokk

Patrick Curmi has replaced former Arsenal FC midfielder Brian Talbot as the new coach of Marsaxlokk FC, signing a two-and-a-half-year contract with theMaltese Premier League club.

FA clearance
The move required clearance from the Malta Football Association as Curmi had only resigned as coach of Premier League rivals Msida St. Joseph FC earlier in the month. His former club had initially refused to give up his resignation, leading Marsaxlokk to seek clearance from the MFA to hire Curmi. "I'm pleased the Malta FA has upheld Marsaxlokk's request," Curmi said. Joe Abdilla has meanwhile taken over as caretaker manager of the Saints.

Top-flight status
In two and a half years with Msida, Curmi's main achievement was to keep them in the Premier League. "I want to thank the Msida players for their commitment and co-operation during my time as coach," Curmi said. "I think we've done a positive job in preserving Msida's top-flight status in the past two seasons. I also want to show my appreciation to the fans for their constant support and I truly hope that they understand my position."

Talbot's new job
Talbot, who steered Marsaxlokk to their first ever Premier League title in 2006/07, will stay with the club in a new role as technical director, while Peter Hartshorne will continue as assistant coach and team manager. Curmi, regarded as one of the top coaches on the island, starts out against champions Valletta on Saturday at the National Stadium.
