Iceland honour Gudjohnsen and Vidarsdóttir

The Football Association of Iceland has named Eidur Gudjohnsen of FC Barcelona and Margrét Lára Vidarsdóttir of Valur Reykjavík as their male and female Player of the Year for 2008 in the fifth edition of their annual poll.

The Football Association of Iceland has named Eidur Gudjohnsen of FC Barcelona and Margrét Lára Vidarsdóttir of Valur Reykjavík as their male and female Player of the Year for 2008 in the fifth edition of their annual poll.

Familiar pairing
A panel of former players, coaches and important figures in Icelandic football named the familiar pairing. Gudjohnsen won the title for the fourth time, having scored three times in six international games as well as reaching the UEFA Champions League semi-finals with Barça. Stabæk IL striker Veigar Páll Gunnarsson and Bolton Wanderers FC defender Grétar Rafn Steinsson finished second and third. Vidarsdóttir received the women's honour for a third successive season, thanks to 32 goals in the league for Valur and 14 more in eleven international fixtures. Kr Reykjavík striker Hólmfrídur Magnúsdóttir came second with Dóra María Lárusdóttir of Valur third.
