Romania fail to halt Swedish charge

Qualified Sweden maintained their perfect qualifying record and have still to concede a goal in Group 2 after a routine 2-0 victory against Romania in Vasteras.

Impressive debut
Sweden coach Thomas Dennerby declared that he would prefer a low scoring win against Romania, keeping that defensive record intact, than a flurry of goals for his side and his wish was granted as the visitors rarely threatened. The home side enjoyed plenty of possession but could only manage two first-half goals to show for their dominance. Therese Sjögran scored the opener after 32 minutes from close range after good work from Lotta Schelin and Kosovare Asllani – a 19-year-old making her international debut at senior level. Five minutes later, Nilla Fischer struck with a powerful half-volley from just outside the penalty area to make it 2-0.

Fischer second
Two more Swedish players – Sara Lindén and Louise Fors – made their senior debuts and both of them were involved in creating chances but Romanian goalkeeper Mirela Ganea prevented any further goals. Sweden have already booked their place in the 2009 UEFA European Women's Championship.
