Wigan Athletic FC and Portsmouth FC recorded resounding victories to earn their first points of the English Premier League season while Arsenal FC joined four other teams at the top of the table with a 3-0 win over Newcastle United FC.

Defoe double
Portsmouth began the day propping up the table after defeats by Chelsea FC and Manchester United FC and a trip to Goodison Park promised to be equally as tough. But Jermain Defoe scored after 12 minutes and Harry Redknapp's side never looked back with Glen Johnson adding a second before half-time. Everton's hopes diminished when David James saved Yakubu Ayegbeni's spot-kick and Defoe (69) compounded the hosts' misery.

Hull routed
Promoted Hull's unbeaten start to top-flight life ground to a shuddering halt as they were overwhelmed 5-0 at home by Wigan. An early own goal from Sam Ricketts was a sign of things to come for Phil Brown's side and a second followed after 13 minutes through Antonio Valencia. The visitors completed the rout after the break with Amr Zaki scoring either side of an Emile Heskey effort. Robin van Persie scored two first-half goals as Arsenal strode to an impressive home win against Newcastle. The first came from the penalty spot, the second after a clever back-heel from Emmanuel Eboué and Denilson added a third just before the hour mark.

Home comfort
Both Middlesbrough FC and West Ham United FC also moved on to six points after registering consecutive home victories. The former saw off ten-man Stoke City FC 2-1 with Afonso Alves and Tuncay Şanlı on target after Amdy Faye's dismissal. Calum Davenport and a Christopher Samba own goal set the Hammers on their way before Craig Bellamy and Carlton Cole wrapped up the 4-1 victory after Jason Roberts replied and had a penalty saved by Robert Green. Bolton Wanderers FC were held to a goalless draw at home by West Bromwich Albion FC.
