Thio, who played 18 times for his country, including in the 1972 UEFA European Championship, passed away after suffering coronary artery complications. Club Brugge, the club he represented from 1963 to 1975, "offered their deepest sympathy to the family". In Bruges, Thio won the Belgian Cup in both 1968 and 1970 before captaining the side to their first post-war league title in 1973. Born in 1944, he had started his career with KSV Roeselare. His international appearances were capped by six goals.
