FC Internazionale Milano have confirmed the appointment of José Mourinho as their new coach on a three-year contract. The 45-year-old replaces Roberto Mancini who was dismissed by the Italian champions last Thursday.

Great success
Mourinho returns to club management nine months after leaving Chelsea FC, whom he won the Premier League title with in both 2005 and 2006. The Portuguese trainer had previously lifted the UEFA Cup with FC Porto in 2003 and the UEFA Champions League in 2004 before quitting his homeland to take up the reins at Stamford Bridge. The self-proclaimed 'Special One' achieved immediate success with Chelsea, leading them to their first championship in 50 years four seasons ago before repeating the feat the following year, as well winning the FA Cup and the League Cup twice while in London.

European goal
Mourinho twice took Chelsea to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League and will be looking to go one better with Inter who have not won the competition since 1965. Mancini led Inter to three straight Serie A titles, ending the Nerazzurri's 17-year wait for the Scudetto in the process, but could not deliver on owner Massimo Moratti's greatest desire to win the UEFA Champions League, which will now be Mourinho's priority. Giuseppe Baresi, a former Inter player currently in charge of the club's youth system, will work as Mourinho's assistant.
