Felix Magath said he had enjoyed everything apart from "the match itself" as his VfL Wolfsburg side lost 2-1 on his return to his former club, FC Bayern München.

Two doubles
Magath won two consecutive league and cup doubles at Bayern before being dismissed at the start of 2007 after a run of disappointing results. The 54-year-old former Hamburger SV midfielder returned to the Fußball Arena München on Saturday for the first time since being hired a Wolfsburg coach, but goals from Miroslav Klose and Franck Ribéry helped Bayern keep the upper hand, with Ashkan Dejagah's 71st minute effort failing to spark a comeback for the visitors.

'Nice to be back'
"It was nice to be back," said Magath afterwards. "Everyone was friendly, I enjoyed the evening - the only thing that did not fit was the match itself." Magath was pleased with the way his team started but was less delighted with their reaction to Klose's opener. He said: "I did not feel threatened by them in the first half hour but conceding showed that we are not very robust yet. We lost our way afterwards and only found back into the game when it was 2-0 to Bayern. We showed heart, but not so much brain."

Hitzfeld happy
His successor and predecessor at Bayern, Ottmar Hitzfeld, was happy with the win, which keeps Bayern a point clear of Werder Bremen and Hamburg at the top of the table. "We played very well for a long time," he said. "It was very important to get three points. We had a lot of possession and were able to capitalise on their mistakes." However, he conceded that "the team is not as robust as it was at the beginning of the season".

Killer instinct
Bayern defender Christian Lell would have liked to have seen his side show more of a killer instinct in the final phase of the game. He said: "[Wolfsburg's] goal brought them back into the match, but we had chances on the counterattack were we did not play accurately enough. In the end we managed to hold on for the win and that's all that matters." Bayern travel to SC Braga for their third UEFA Cup Group F game on Thursday.
