Article body
Karen Carney scored the only goal as England continued their perfect start to UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2009™ qualifying with a 1-0 victory against Spain.
Cool finish
Carney's composed finish after 65 minutes made it three wins from as many matches in Group 1, as England dominated throughout against Ignacio Quereda's team. The hosts started purposefully as Fara Williams and Jill Scott were both denied following a goalmouth scramble, while Kelly Smith's cross after beating four players evaded Eniola Aluko.
Spain chance
The second period followed much the same pattern as the first, with England continuing to threaten the visitors' goal. And the goal duly arrived midway through the half when a move involving Lianne Sanderson, Smith and Alex Scott was finished off by Carney, who guided the ball into the bottom corner. However England endured a late scare when Laura beat two players only for her curling effort to strike the crossbar. But England held on to create a two point lead over the second-placed Czech Republic. Spain are one place and three points further back.
