Article body
Switzerland bounced back from their 7-0 defeat at the hands of Germany to claim their second victory in UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2009™ qualifying Group 4. Goals near the end of each half in the game played at Rhyl FC were enough to see off a spirited Wales team who remain at the foot of the section and without a point after three rounds.
Graf opener
The visitors went ahead on 40 minutes following a high free-kick by Rahel Graf of FC Luwin. The ball bounced in front of goalkeeper Nicola Davies and sailed over her into the net. That was a little harsh on the Welsh, who competed strongly in the first half to the delight of a 478 home crowd. They kept plugging away but their captain, Arsenal LFC’s Jayne Ludlow, was not at her inspirational best, while Cheryl Foster did not pack her usual punch in attack following a bout of tonsillitis.
Dismissal
The Swiss, in second place in the section behind Germany with seven points, were more in control after the break and wrapped up their victory in the 82nd minute with a fine individual effort from Martina Moser, who drove down the right and evaded the attentions of two defenders before coolly slotting home. Three minutes from time Ramona Bachmann was ordered off following a second yellow card but there was not enough time for Wales, under caretaker manager Adrian Tucker, to make their numerical advantage tell.
