The Netherlands withstood a tremendous challenge from Wales before holding on for a win that takes them up to second place in UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2009™ qualifying Group 4.
Dutch hold on
Having lost to Germany and drawn with Switzerland, Vera Pauw's side were looking for a victory against a team who came through the preliminary round and were yet to get off the mark in the group. Pauw also had several injury problems, but her team took the lead early in the second half with a fine solo effort from LDB FC Malmö winger Manon Melis. Sylvia Smit headed a second in the 63rd minute and although Emma Jones pulled one back with 16 minutes left, the Netherlands held on.
'Very glad'
Pauw said: "We certainly did not have it easy. We had enough chances, but as long as you do not score, you always run the risk. The Welsh long balls were dangerous but we are very glad about the win." Her team welcome Germany for their next game on 1 November, four days after Wales play Switzerland.
