Hamill hailed for Scotland century

Scottish women's football is set to reach a new landmark on Sunday when Pauline Hamill becomes their first player to win 100 caps.

Only one man, Kenny Dalglish, has made a century of appearances for the senior Scotland team and Hammill could soon pass his mark of 102, as she reaches treble figures this weekend in a friendly against Belgium in Perth. Hibernian LFC striker Hamill, who last week was in Austria helping her club finish second in UEFA Women's Cup first quallifying round Group A3, made her Scotland debut in 1992 against England aged 20, and a special ceremony to mark her achievement will be held before the Belgium match.

'Real honour'
Hamill, a football development officer for Falkirk FC, said: "For the first female to get to 100 caps it is a real honour and I can't believe it's me. I am happy to reach my 100 caps. However, I am even happier for those who supported me on my journey, my mum, dad and partner, and I thank them for helping me along the way. It's been an amazing journey."

Signeul tribute
Coach Anna Signeul added her tribute, saying: "It is a big personal sacrifice to play for your country as well as working full time, but the players are all committed to playing for their country." Scotland have one point from two UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2009™ qualifying Group 5 games, and their next competitive matches are a trip to Slovenia on 27 October and a home game with Denmark in Perth four days later.
