Article body
Debut goal
New signing Diego Forlán and Sergio Agüero had been on holiday to recuperate from their Copa América exertions but Atlético coach Javier Aguirre's decision to recall them early paid off as Forlán scored his first goal for the club eleven minutes into his debut. The Uruguayan international, who signed from Villarreal CF this summer, was the first to react to a fortuitous deflection in the penalty area and his striking instincts proved crucial to the outcome of the match.
Maniche chance
Gloria, who won the first leg 2-1, struggled to recapture the form of last weekend and could only look on as Maniche hit the post on 32 minutes. Midway through the second half, Argentina forward Agüero also missed a chance to score a debut goal when firing narrowly wide to keep the match on tenterhooks. One goal for the visitors would have taken them through to the next round but they could not find a way through Atlético's obdurate rearguard and it is the Spanish side left eyeing the UEFA Cup proper from the second qualifying round.
