Coach Willem van Hanegem's home debut was ruined.
Article body
Hammarby progressed into the second qualifying round of the UEFA Cup on away goals after holding FC Utrecht to a 1-1 draw at the Galgenwaard stadium.
Home debut
Willem van Hanegem took his place on the bench for his first home match as coach knowing a win would see his side qualify from this UEFA Intertoto Cup tie after the goalless draw in Stockholm one week ago. Although the first half spawned no goals, the start of the second half produced the vital opening strike for the side from the Netherlands. Hammarby captain Sebastián Eguren was at fault as his pass was intercepted by the quick-witted Robin Nelisse, and the former Feyenoord and AZ Alkmaar striker took full advantage of the lapse to fire his side in front.
Immediate reply
But no sooner had the home side finished celebrating than they were pegged back as David Johansson tapped in the equaliser at the far post following a corner. Matters were made worse for the hosts shortly after when Sander Keller became involved with José Monteiro and was sent off. Despite their numerical disadvantage, Utrecht still hunted for the victory with substitute Leroy George coming very close in the final minute. But goalkeeper Benny Lekström managed to hold firm to ensure the Swedish side continued on their European adventure.
