The 31-year-old former FC Barcelona playmaker arrived at the Olímpico de Montjuic in 2002 from S.S. Lazio and has since played 140 Primera División games for the Catalan club. De la Peña also featured prominently in the run to the 2007 UEFA Cup final, which Espanyol lost on penalties to Sevilla FC.
