Iceland delight fans with victory

Iceland ended a fanstastic week in UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2009™ qualifying with a comfortable defeat of Serbia in front of a new record crowd for a female international.

With Iceland having gained a 1-0 win against Group 3 top seeds France at the weekend, 5,976 turned up to watch this game at the Laugardalsvöllur national stadium - more than 3,000 higher than the previous record for a women's international in this country. And the victory took Iceland three points clear of France on a maximum tally of nine.

It only took Dóra Stefánsdóttir three minutes to score against a Serbian team with three Icelandic-based players in their starting lineup when she followed-up a shot which the goalkeeper did not hold and 20 minutes later Dóra María Lárusdóttir added one more after a pass from captain Ásthildur Helgadóttir. Twelve minutes into the second half defender Katrín Jónsdóttir turned in an Edda Gardarsdóttir corner and Margrét Lára Vidarsdóttir added on 81st minute made it four after being set up by substitute Hólmfrídur Magnúsdóttir. A Serbian own goal completed the scoring and they remain third with three points from two games. Serbia resume action in the group on 25 August at home to Greece; Iceland go to Slovenia the next day but thoughts may already be turning to what could be a decisive trip to France in September 2008.
