West Ham give up on Upson

Members

West Ham United FC will be without Matthew Upson for the remainder of the season and have been fined €8m for breaching Premiership registration rules.

Wigan game
Signed for €9m from Birmingham City FC in January, Upson has been able to play just 41 minutes of football for the club, coming off injured in league games against Aston Villa FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC. West Ham are looking to avoid relegation and could take a significant step towards safety with a win at fellow strugglers Wigan Athletic FC tomorrow.

Record fine
The London club were fined €8m today, but spared a points deduction, after the Premiership authorities punished them for a breach of ownership rules over their signings of Argentinian internationals Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano last August. The fine, a record in English football, came as a result of the league’s rules over third-party ownership of the two players. Mascherano has since joined Liverpool FC.
