Fred facing UEFA charge

UEFA has instigated disciplinary proceedings against Olympique Lyonnais forward Fred for allegedly elbowing AS Roma defender Cristian Chivu during the French club's exit from the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.

Match referee Manuel Mejuto González did not see the incident, which occurred in the 36th minute at the Stade de Gerland and left Chivu with a bloodied nose, so UEFA opened the case having subsequently watched it on video, as is allowed under the disciplinary regulations. Roma won the game 2-0 to advance to the quarter-finals on the same aggregate scoreline. The case will be dealt with on 22 March.
