Article body
PSV Eindhoven coach Ronald Koeman and his Arsenal FC counterpart Arsène Wenger were united in the belief that an even contest at the PSV Stadium swung the home side's way in the second half as a goal from Edison Méndez gave the Dutch champions a narrow lead to take to north London for the second leg on 7 March.
Ronald Koeman, PSV coach
This was the best possible result for us and based on our second-half performance, we deserved it. We've shown this evening nothing is impossible in football - we might have less quality than Arsenal, but if you have the right tactics and the organisation is perfect, it's possible to beat them and that's what we did. In the second half there was more energy in the team and that gave us the belief to play with confidence and make life tough for Arsenal. We've now got a lead so we have a chance of going through, but it will be very difficult because Arsenal attack so swiftly and we'll really have to watch out for that.
Arsène Wenger, Arsenal manager
We played well in the first half but a lot worse in the second. The team's level dropped and the fluency and the passing were not as good. We lost our rhythm and didn't create anything. In the first half we had our chances but didn't take them and then you have to be patient and your tactics must be right. The result is disappointing for us, but we have enough confidence to get through in the second match.
