UEFA has opened an investigation into events at the UEFA Champions League first knockout round first-leg match between LOSC Lille Métropole and Manchester United FC in Lens on Tuesday night.
Possible violations
European football's governing body said on Wednesday that it was investigating possible violations of binding UEFA safety and security instructions by the host club, as well as the alleged improper conduct of both sets of supporters. The matter will be discussed at the next ordinary meeting of the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body on 22 March.
Lille protest
UEFA also confirmed on Wednesday evening that it had received a protest from Lille concerning an alleged violation of the Laws of the Game by the referee when Manchester United scored the only goal of the match through Ryan Giggs. A decision will be taken on Friday afternoon.
Van Bommel investigation
Meanwhile, UEFA said that it would also be looking into allegations of unsporting conduct by FC Bayern München's Dutch midfielder Mark van Bommel, who scored his side's second goal in their 3-2 defeat by Real Madrid CF in last night's UEFA Champions League first knockout round first leg in Spain.
